With around 30 days a year over 100°F and roughly 108 days over 90°F, cooling is the load your equipment lives and dies by. Heating matters — we do see nights below freezing, about 50 of them in an average year, and the record low is 1°F — but it’s a secondary season here, not the main event.
That changes the smart order of priorities. First, keep the cooling system clean, correctly charged, and sized to the house. Second, seal and insulate so the cooled air stays inside — the 2021 IECC targets R-38 in the ceiling for our zone, and a lot of older San Angelo homes fall well short. Third, choose efficiency that pays back over a long cooling season: as of January 2023 the Department of Energy set the Southeast-region minimum at 14.3 SEER2 for most new central AC units, and going above the floor makes real financial sense when the compressor runs as many hours as it does here.
